Princeton Mac Users Quadruple

MotoringFile Sections: Apple, Site News Oct 9th, 2007 No Comments

Pretty interesting statistics regarding Mac usage at one of the most prestigious universities in the world:

In the 2003-04 school year, when the iPod was just becoming popular, a mere 10 percent of Princeton students had Mac computers connected to the network, OIT director Steven Sather said.

Sixteen percent of students chose Macs when the Class of 2008 arrived on campus the subsequent fall. The figure reached 23 percent the following year and then jumped to 31 percent of all personal computers on the network in fall 2006.

This year, the University’s Student Computer Initiative has sold more Macs than PCs. Students were offered a selection of Dell, IBM and Apple computers, and 60 percent chose Macs, up from 45 percent last year.

Initial Thoughts on the 24″ iMac

After some drama with Fedex I finally received my 24″ iMac. The premise behind the purchase was to use it as a powerful workstation, TV (via the MicroTV by Miglia), entertainment center (via Front Row) and bit-torrent hub (used exclusively for motorsport). I can’t comment on the TV aspect because Comcast isn’t anyway near being ready to install the new port. However I can say that the machine and it’s capabilities have exceeded all my expectations. It’s sort of unique in that the computer is in our kitchen actually on our integrated desk in the corner. While using it as a entertainment device you simply turn it to the left and it’s in a great position to double as a TV. Once I get it wall-mounted it’ll be even better.

Front Row is a Godsend. It transforms the computer into the perfect entertainment device. The elegant interface never made sense on my Powerbook. Now looking at a 24″ screen across the room it’s an epiphany. In fact you could say the same for the machine as a whole.

24 Reasons…

When it came down to getting an iMac as a combination main computer/kitchen TV, it wasn’t hard to talk myself into the new 24″ after seeing the size of the screen. As I stared in awe at all 24″ of glory at the Apple store, it suddenly become all too clear what had to be done.

OSX Leopard Reactions

Spaces will be a fantastic addition to my daily workflow and will be worth the upgrade price by itself.

Time Machine has a great interface at it’s core but the execution is just tacky as hell. And of course to actually use it I’ll need at least a 200gb hard drive in my laptop.

Voice over: Finally, we can put to rest those old school OS8 voices.

Mail.app improvements: On the face of it they are very welcome. However I’m a bit nervous about the execution and the integration with the rest of OSX. If not done well usability could be a big issue here.

iChat with screen sharing. Yes! This is huge if you work out of the office or in colaboration with those who do. Thank you Apple.

Now… I can’t wait to hear the additional features Jobs refers to as “secret”.
