What Not to Do While Driving in a Severe Snow Storm

Based on a three hour drive from South Bend to Chicago in a recent severe winter storm:

  • Talk on a cell phone
  • Pass on the shoulder
  • Think your SUV can stop as well as it can go
  • Run red lights
  • Cut people off

…else ye may end up in a road-side ditch.

I just did Chicago to Hastings, MI and back in the recent ice storm. The Mini does so well on city streets in the snow. On the highway on black ice, not so much…

Speaking as someone with nearly 30 years experience driving in winter weather, I have a few entries for your ‘what not to do’ list. How about…

• travel without a gallon of anti-freeze washer fluid in the boot
• drive in front of an SUV driver who thinks they can stop as well as they can go
• drive close to ANY driver under 20 yrs old, especially if they’re in a rear-wheel drive muscle car
• apply any sudden input to either of the right, two pedals!

I enjoy winter driving mainly because it brings out what usually requires a lot more speed on dry pavement. It definitely refines my skills and forces me to use smoother steering and pedal inputs. Everyone should experience a few seasons of winter weather driving (while I’m not on the road).

After driving my 330 in a snowstorm at 7,000 ft above sea level, I came to the conclusion that AWD is overrated. A good set of snowtires with the DSC engaged and you are good to go!!!
