Indiana Fall Colors

MotoringFile Sections: Personal, Photography Oct 31st, 2006 No Comments

I finally got a chance to take my (still) new Sony R1 out and capture some of the colors of the season. This series of photos was taken at my childhood home just outside Elkhart Indiana. The tree featured is (from what we can tell) most likely over two hundred years old.

The Death of the PC

…has been greatly exagerated over the years. But there’s something to this latest statement by the CEO of Symbian that has resonated with me:

Clifford cited the rates of technology adoption in India to back up his point. In India, the PC market is growing at 5 million units a year, while mobile phones were enjoying the same growth per month.

Symbian’s head of propositions, John Forsyth, later argued that “in five years’ time you’ll wonder why you need a PC at all.”

Speaking to ZDNet UK at the show, Forsyth said that “phones are beginning to eat into the space” that laptops were designed for.

It’s interesting in that, for the past few months, I’ve had my eye on a Nokia E61 for it’s QWERTY keyboard, QVGA screen and wifi capabilities. But it never occurred to be now that what I’m wanting is basically a laptop that fits in my pocket.

Snow!

MotoringFile Sections: Chicago Oct 12th, 2006 No Comments

It’s October 12th and I’m looking out my office window onto a driving snowstorm. Four days ago it was 80F - Now it’s 30F. Chicago weather… never a dull moment. And I have to admit I secretly love it.

Initial Thoughts on the 24″ iMac

After some drama with Fedex I finally received my 24″ iMac. The premise behind the purchase was to use it as a powerful workstation, TV (via the MicroTV by Miglia), entertainment center (via Front Row) and bit-torrent hub (used exclusively for motorsport). I can’t comment on the TV aspect because Comcast isn’t anyway near being ready to install the new port. However I can say that the machine and it’s capabilities have exceeded all my expectations. It’s sort of unique in that the computer is in our kitchen actually on our integrated desk in the corner. While using it as a entertainment device you simply turn it to the left and it’s in a great position to double as a TV. Once I get it wall-mounted it’ll be even better.

Front Row is a Godsend. It transforms the computer into the perfect entertainment device. The elegant interface never made sense on my Powerbook. Now looking at a 24″ screen across the room it’s an epiphany. In fact you could say the same for the machine as a whole.

Sketching

It’s an art that, admitedly, I haven’t practiced seriously since I was in high school. With my current work I find simple sketched in Illustrator to be more effecient and easier to build from. However after seeing BMW Design Works desgner Tommy Forsgren’s work, I beginning to think I should consider going back to the old school pencil and sketchbook approach. Not that I could easily reproduce the quality of his work. But it used to be so liberating to think and sketch almost instantaneously.
