Peter McCarthy was the Stig?

Who would have thought a bald guy could be that fast?. Apparently he’s now moved and which leaves the identity of the current Stig open to all sorts of speculation.

Hummer Continues Stereotype of Owners

Crazy but true. Here’s an excerpt from a Slate.com article on the campaign:

…the spot reinforces the central, classic stereotype about Hummer drivers: They buy big cars because they have small … egos.

It’s stunning how enthusiastically the ad embraces this idea. The entire plot is based on it: A guy feels wimpy because another guy saw him buying tofu, so he dashes out and buys a Hummer to feel better about himself.

I had this idea lastnight as I was going to sleep. So today around 5pm I started. By 8pm I had this. It’s funny how you beat around the bush for years and all it takes is a really simple design philosphy and two hours of hard work. Now I just need to start replacing the rest of the photography… it’s never-ending!

Automotive Goals

MotoringFile Sections: Auto Aug 8th, 2006 5 Comments

As the reality of my 30th birthday has finally set-in (six months later), I started thinking about goals. Now professional goals, life goals, all that stuff has already been set, tucked away and conteplated way too much since college. I’m referring to automotive goals. Specifically what would I love to be driving in five years time.

As the founder of MotoringFile this gets kinda tricky since I technically should have a MINI. And since my second car looks to be of the four door (if not wagon) variety for at least the next 20+ years, anything new will either have to replace the MINI or be pre-owned. However since this is a goal (far-fetched most likely), let’s just shoot for the stars shall we? So here’s my list of a MINI replacement down the road:

  • Porsche Cayman
  • BMW Z4 Coupe or Z4 M Coupe
  • BMW M3 (E46)
  • Pristine BMW 2002tii

OSX Leopard Reactions

Spaces will be a fantastic addition to my daily workflow and will be worth the upgrade price by itself.

Time Machine has a great interface at it’s core but the execution is just tacky as hell. And of course to actually use it I’ll need at least a 200gb hard drive in my laptop.

Voice over: Finally, we can put to rest those old school OS8 voices.

Mail.app improvements: On the face of it they are very welcome. However I’m a bit nervous about the execution and the integration with the rest of OSX. If not done well usability could be a big issue here.

iChat with screen sharing. Yes! This is huge if you work out of the office or in colaboration with those who do. Thank you Apple.

Now… I can’t wait to hear the additional features Jobs refers to as “secret”.

Let’s hope this is just semantics and not a true change in ideology.

When a Good Host Goes Bad

MotoringFile Sections: Hosts Aug 1st, 2006 4 Comments

My other site has been hosted with Dreamhost for over a year. For 11 months I never had an issue. Other than an LA power outtage related issue, there was not one single problem that seemed to last more than a few minutes. Add to that great customer support and a web panel better than any host I’d ever seen and I was quite happy.

However within the last two weeks the site has gone down seemingly almost every other day and for hours at a time. Each time there appears to be different issues with everything from DNS attacks to fires to hardware causing downtime. Pretty much everything but a plague. I cannot tell you how frustrating this has become.

My question; at what point do I say enough is enough and jump ship?
