I’d add The Replacements, Husker Du and Sonic Youth, although I’d latched on to them by the early 90s.

Gabe, a couple of well-written books you might find interesting are ‘The Creation Records Story: My Magpie Eyes Are Hungry For The Prize’ which covers many of England’s major indie bands in the 80s, and also ‘Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground, 1981-1991′ which offers a parallel look at punk rock and the DIY movement in the US at the same time.
