Hard Drive Crashes, Data Lost, Life Re-evaluated

Okay… it’s not that bad. However my Powerbook’s hard drive did indeed turn to dust this weekend. Naturally I had intended to back-up today thinking something was up. I never got the time.

Everything from August on (when I last backed up) is completely gone. Email, projects, time sheets, music, everything.

Sorry to hear of your troubles.

My tech set me up with a nightly back up, I’m kinda surprised that someone with your skills doesn’t have that? I also wonder why an IBM hard drive on a Apple? Does that mean you don’t use OSX? Must be a drive size issue.

Good luck with the job search, must be a creative issue or money or both. Good luck in getting a better job and all.

I used to back up weekly. Unfortunately I’ve just been plain lazy over the lat couple of months.

Apple uses hard drives from manufacturers like IBM (now Hitachi) for many of it’s products. My last Powerbook had a Toshiba drive in it.

That’s right I forgot about the IBM thing until I was reading an article on the Intel drives.

I’ve been flirting with disaaster for a while now. My iMac g4 has had a horrible case of the Kernel Panics for quite some time now. I’ve finally convinced the fine folks at Apple that this is a problem which is notorious & inherent with these machines. They’ve finally agreed to pick up the tab for the repair. (Warranty’s been up for almost two years… persistance pays). I think the fact that I’m waiting on my 3rd iPod replacement under warranty (they’ve all just stopped working - sad face icon) had a little bit to do with swaying them to fix the ole’ iMac. My mother is on her 2nd 17″ Powerbook under warranty.

When I told the Apple rep about all of the hardware problems I and my family have had with their machines since switching, his reponse was, “Yes, but we have great warranties.”

I never thought I’d say this, but Apple would do well by letting other companies make OS X machines. The competition would strenghten their commitment towards reliable hardware as well as they’ve done with software.

I’ve had my G4 for for 5 years almost no problems but my wife’s one year old iMac died a few months ago 1 day before the warranty was up.
