How Hollywood is Fighting Piracy with King Kong

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Aug 30th, 2005 No Comments

From the New York Times:

Universal, aiming to protect filmdom’s mightiest gorilla, is watermarking and encrypting copies of “King Kong.” It is also supervising access to the film during all phases of its production, monitoring online any machinations involving the movie and planning to guard advance screenings.

“This is not just about the film industry: whether you’re talking about the pharmaceutical industry, the information technology industry or filmed entertainment, the protection of intellectual property is crucial,” said Darcy Antonellis, who helps oversee antipiracy efforts for Warner Brothers, a unit of Time Warner. “If we can’t build businesses around ideas, and feel comfortable that we have the right to those ideas, then our entire business is threatened.”

Rio Goes Under

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Aug 26th, 2005 No Comments

A bit of MP3 history has passed on today. Rio, maker of the first mass market MP3 player (released all the way back in 1998 has officially gone under. I remember vividly when this small upstart released the 32MB PMP300. While 32MB wasn’t a lot of memory (even then) it did prove to be a great conversation piece and quite handy. I had the 64MB version of what came next. In fact it still works despite being at the bottom of my desk for years now.

This excerpt says it all (from the Car Connection’s resident mechanic about VWs well reported quality issues):

Sooner or later the VW customer will meet a Toyota owner and discover this is not normal. You can only count on those old Sixties kids buying VWs for so much longer.
