2005 Chicago Auto Show Review & Gallery

This was originally posted a few weeks ago on my other weblog, MotoringFile.

First off this show is huge. 1.6 million sq ft on one level. And with this year the addition of two indoor test tracks has made it even bigger than before. In fact in terms of attendance there’s nothing bigger in the US. Sure Detroit gets more of the world premiers but at Chicago there’s much more accessability. And the new McCormick Place is just a pheonimonal place to see a show.

I’m not going to go into the detail I did last year but I will touch on a few highs and lows as I saw them.

So I’m officially 29 today. I can’t believe I’m only one year away from 30. When I was a kid I figured I’d have a robot butler and a car that talked to me by the time I was 30. I guess I’ll have to settle for being 29 and having a digital watch.

I’ve been tinkering with some design on this site as of late (thanks Matt) in an effort to test some new design language ideas for MotoringFile. If there’s anything you like or aren’t sure about, feel free to let me know. If there’s anything that just doesn’t look right… just hit refresh :)

The N.B.A. doesn’t have a thug problem; it has a basketball problem. Its players are the best athletes in all of pro sports — oversize, swift and agile — but weirdly they are also the first to have devolved to a point where they can no longer play their own game.

Can a Black Box See Into the Future?

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Feb 16th, 2005 No Comments

At first glance it is an unremarkable piece of equipment. Encased in metal, it contains at its heart a microchip no more complex than the ones found in modern pocket calculators.

But, according to a growing band of top scientists, this box has quite extraordinary powers. It is, they claim, the ‘eye’ of a machine that appears capable of peering into the future and predicting major world events.

…It is possible - in theory - that time may not just move forwards but backwards, too. And if time ebbs and flows like the tides in the sea, it might just be possible to foretell major world events. We would, in effect, be ‘remembering’ things that had taken place in our future.

Napster Going After the iPod

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Feb 14th, 2005 No Comments

Napster CEO Chris Gorog believes the best way to market the new service is to emphasise its advantages over iTunes. He’s particularly keen to highlight iTunes’ iPod-only compatibility. “We’re going to be communicating to people that it’s stupid to buy an iPod.” (Forbes)

Almost as stupid as renting music?

Consider this example: I have been purchasing CDs for about 20 years now, in which time I’ve accumulated about 300 of the things. At an average of $15 each, I’ve spent $4,500. Now suppose that, instead of buying those CDs, I could have opened up a Napster To Go account back in 1985. My total bill would be $3,600 and counting — and although I might have accumulated a larger, more diverse collection, I wouldn’t own any of it. (Washington Post)
