No Voice

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Nov 27th, 2004 1 Comment

I've officially lost my voice. Due to a pretty bad cold I've got nothing left but a bit of a whisper. So if you're trying to get a hold of me and wondering why I'm not picking up the phone, now you know. I'll be sticking to email for the next day or so :)

Are Hybrid Cars Really Worth the Price?

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Nov 17th, 2004 No Comments

Possibly not according to the aptly named auto website The Truth About Cars:

Because of the low speeds involved, the city portion of the EPA’s test is accomplished in battery-only mode. As the gasoline engine is off-line for a significant part of the test, the eventual mileage figure is grossly inflated. The test fails to consider the fuel needed to recharge the batteries later on. What’s more, all energy-draining, electrically-powered accessories (including AC) are switched off during both the urban and highway tests. These variables contribute to the huge discrepancy between the EPA’s official numbers and hybrid owners’ real world experience.

An interesting read for those considering one of these vehicles. For my money one of the new hi-tech, hi-mileage diesels from Europe are more interesting. You can read more here.

How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb

Since it'll be said many many times over the course of the next month or two I'll come out and say it now. The new U2 album “How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb” may be the best collection of music released this year. No seriously… I'm not being ironic.

Update: Okay - I was wrong. It's a solid album. U2 fans will love it. However out 5 (tough) stars I would give it a 3.5. The first half fantastic. However the entire thing is let down by the last couple of songs.

Disco Dancing while Asking for Money

My new favorite street act in Chicago: a twenty-something subruban looking white kid disco dancing to a boom box. I heard somewhere he's a grad student who needs extra money. No idea if that's actually the case but he's pretty impressive.

FreeiPods.com

Yes this is completely legit. It’s also a great idea. Here’s the low-down on how it works and why it work from Wired: Making Free IPods Pay Off.

Here’s an excerpt from the site freeipodguide.com explaining the process:

<blockquote><ol>
    <li>Click the given referral link (<em>Here's <a http://www.freeiPods.com/?r=11575021">my FreeiPods.com link</a></em>) and enter a VALID US mailing address.
<li>Complete the marketing survey - note that your answers do not have any impact on your ability to receive an iPod.</li>
<li>Once signed up, you should receive a verification email. If you did not receive an email go to the My Account page and click the link to send the verification email - you may also change your email address on that page, and then send the activation link to that address. (Note: There have been problems reported using Hotmail addresses)</li>
<li>Sign up with one of their partners and complete an offer. Skip down to see instructions on
the different options for completing offers. (It can take up to a few days for the offer completion to appear on your account)</li>
<li>Refer <em>5</em> friends and have them complete <em>1</em> offer each</li>
<li>Wait for your iPod to ship!</li>
</ol></blockquote>

So after I wrote this I actually signed up to see how it works. I signed up for two free weeks from Blockbuster’s new Netflix like mail service and now just need to get 5 friends to do the same. Most can be cancelled within free periods. My link is here if anyone is interested: http://www.freeiPods.com/?r=11575021.

The Daylight Savings Time Scam

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Nov 1st, 2004 3 Comments

Someone please explain to me why there is Daylight Savings Time. Every reason I've heard so far makes absolutely no sense. Thus I'm boycotting it this year. I'll just be arriving an hour late to everything.
