The Homeless Dos and Don'ts

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Oct 25th, 2004 No Comments

Walking through downtown Chicago daily I've become familiar with quite a few homeless people. I've also become familiar with some of the dos and don't of being homeless and begging for money.

The don'ts:

  • Don't eat a cheeseburger while asking for money.
  • Don't have nicer shoes than me.
  • Don't smoke, be drunk or smell of Colt 45.
  • Don't use a monotone angry voice while asking for money… I'm looking at you ladies on the Madison St. bridge.

The dos:

  • Dogs… nothing like a hungry, sad looking dog at your feet to bring in the money. The homeless in London and Paris know how to work this especially well.
  • Sing, breakdance, play drums on 5-gallon buckets… just do something to make people smile. Even the funky robot would suffice.
  • Look hungry.
  • Try to clean up and get a job .

A comparison of Star Wars figures from 1977 and 1997. Of course the worst offender has to be Lando… no way he's gonna have a six-pack like that after all those years of Colt 45.

The Lost Art of Meaningful Mixtapes

From the daily Trojan, the daily newspaper of USC:

Mixtapes and playlists are an essential part of a balanced music lifestyle. I've always believed that music is a contextual experience, and the slow, careful creation of a compilation can reveal deep relationships between songs.

But the real beauty behind the making and the receiving of a compilation tape is far beyond that of the songs itself. A good mixtape facilitates a wonderfully diverse type of communication, where each selected song sings its poetry within the context of a greater meaning.

You can read the entire thing here.

BTW 100% of this guys music selelctions are crap but he writes well enough to make his point despite of it.

News Flash… Remodeling a Kitchen is Serious Work

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Oct 6th, 2004 1 Comment

So I'm gutting the kitchen in my new place and installing some pretty nice in it's place with the help of my dad. I figured it would be lots of work and time but somehow I underestimated the amount of work and time it would actually take. Needless to say I've been really busy ripping out fiber board, carting away tile, installing slate, cleaning slate (repeat 5 times) mounting cabinets and trying meanwhile to make sense of it all. Oh yeah, did I mention we have no running water in the kitchen? And don't even ask about the stove!

I've averaged 2.25 trips to Home Depot a day (don't ask) and have spent way more than I had intended. Luckily my budget was very conservative and, in a sense, over spending was assumed. But still it's all a shock to the system.
