David Chapelle on Fame and Celebrities

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Jun 22nd, 2004 No Comments

From the Tribnet.com:

“Stop listening to celebrities,” he said. “They do what they do for money - that's all. I don't even know why you're listening to me. I've done commercials for both Coke and Pepsi. Truth is, I can't even taste the difference, but Pepsi paid me last, so there it is.”

Celebrity worship harms the object of affection as well, Chappelle said. “One day people love you more than they've ever loved anything in the world. And the next, you're in front of a courthouse dancing on top of a car.”

In case the audience didn't get the reference to Michael Jackson, he said, “You know why Michael Jackson's had so many surgeries? He wanted you to like him more.”

A Ghost is Born

One of the hardest things to do is follow-up a critically successful album. Wilco was in that difficult position in following up Yankee Hotel Foxtrot. YHF was the album of the year but most major rock critics in 2002 and it's critical and commercial success have propelled Wilco to a level once thought impossible in the days of bar shows, flannel and, roots rock. In fact one of the biggest changes after YHF is the audience at the shows. It's gone from almost 100% painfully obvious single 20-something guys to couples, hipsters, and (gasp) attractive women.

Yet despite all this change and new media attention Wilco have released an album that surprisingly succeeds on a level that YHF never really reached. Where a listen to YHF (while rewarding) could be almost emotionally draining AGiB is simply enjoyable and simply put, fun.

A Ghost is Born is the first Wilco album since Being There that I've wanted to listen to over and over again. It's also the first recorded primarily live in the studio since Being There.

So someone explain to me why PitchFork just gave it a 6.6 out of 10. I've now read the review twice and still can't figure out how they came to any of their conclusions. Especially since they gave YHF a 10 almost 2 years ago. Interestingly RollingStone gave AGiB a 4 out of 5.

Also of interest - AGiB is Amazon's top album seller today.

Another Reason I Love F1 Racing

From the New York Times:

Schumacher, who won the Canadian Grand Prix here on Sunday, personifies a new breed of racers whose success hinges as much on his mastery of computerized systems as on his driving skill.

Before each race, he said, “I sit with the engineers and combine the feeling I have as a driver with what they are seeing in the data” - data allowing simulations of all manner of situations that Schumacher might face.

Once in the driver's seat, he sits alone. But as he races, his Ferrari team can track even the most minute aspect of the competition, capturing data in multi-megabyte wireless bursts each time the team's cars flash past the pits, often in excess of 200 miles an hour.

Amish theme park planned for Indiana Town

MotoringFile Sections: Uncategorized Jun 9th, 2004 6 Comments

Here some excerpt from an article in today's Chicago Tribune:

ELKHART, Ind. - The city's mayor is hopeful that his recent trip to Germany will lead to some investors for a proposed Amish-inspired theme park.

American Countryside is to be built over 10 years. Plans for the 320-acre park southwest of the city include restaurants, hotels, shops, a water park, a dinner theater, a steam-train railroad, a farm arena amphitheater, re-creation of a 1950s small town and a 100-foot glass barn in the middle of an island.

Miller said the first phase of the project was expected to begin this year with construction of an indoor farmer's market.

Okay it kinda makes sense until you think about some of the details. For one what's with the glass barn??? I mean what exactly is that going to signify - the high-tech side of Amish society? I wonder why a town would want to associate itself so heavily with the Amish? What does a glass barn say about the progressive nature of the surrounding area when it comes to commerce?

If you're wondering why I care… Elkhart Indiana is my hometown and a place I spent roughly the first 20 years of my life.
